Palaiokastritsa is hard to beat when it comes to beauty and atmosphere. Its coves, fine sandy beaches and olive groves make it one of Greece 's most popular tourist destinations. Although several resorts and large hotels have sprung up in the area it still retains a natural secluded charm.
On top of Palaiokastritsa lies the famous Monastery of Zodocho Pigis, dating back to the 13th century, and though the main building is restricted for the monks, the courtyard and a small museum housing Byzantine icons is open to the public.
After a day on the beach, the water here is superb for swimming, and you can eat at any number of the excellent restaurants in the adjacent area. Fresh fish and especially lobster are the local specialty. To appreciate the splendor of the coastal region climb onto the plateau known as Bella Vista in the village of Lakones for an unforgettable view of Palaiokastritsa's spectacular coves.
